Merin Frank, Cultural Development Corporation’s Development Associate on our annual gala, FlashForward.
As Tina Turner said in her preface to Proud Mary, she never, ever likes to do things nice and easy. At CuDC, when it came to our annual Gala, we chose that as our motto. Rather than throw a rubber chicken affair at a Marriott or Hilton, we laid claim to a defunct-office/church/warehouse building on 14th Street, NW. After all, we deal in space.
With a little dry wall, paint, floor filler and A LOT of hard work from our staff and volunteers, we got the space in working order, ready to house the 250 people attending FLASHforward, CuDC’s 2008 Gala.
‘Gala’ sounds a little stiff for what went down – think belly dancers and graffiti-ed walls. Drinks by Campari and SKYY Vodka and dinner by WellDunn set the tone, followed by performances by Sol & Soul and Dhoonya Dance, tunes from DJ D-Mac and a lively live auction. We partied the night away with our After Party and I finally got home at 3am! Whew.
Best of all, we raised over $100,000 to support or programs and services. The drinks were cool, the party was hot. Tina was onto something.
